2,700 seedlings planted in Taguig

Over 2,700 seedlings of different plants and trees have found a home along C5 Road in Barangay Western Bicutan, Taguig City.

The tree-planting activity was carried out jointly by Toshiba Asia Pacific, the local government of Taguig, other government agencies and non-government organizations (NGOs).

The said project, dubbed Toshiba Asia-Oceania Tree Planting, saw the planting of Palawan cherry, yakal, African tulip, banaba and acacia rain tree seedlings on a patch of land along the road. Taguig would no doubt go a long way in “greening” the area.

Lawyer Darwin Icay, spokesperson of Taguig Mayor Lani Cayetano, said that the project goes well with the local chief executive’s proactive stance on environmental preservation and protection.

“Even before her days as Taguig-Pateros congresswoman, Ate Lani has a staunch advocacy of caring for the environment as a means of looking after our own future and that of our children’s. Needless to say, an activity like this is toward that direction,” Icay said.

Toshiba Asia Pacific chose Taguig City as the first recipient of its tree-planting project. The electronics giant said it aims to plant 1.5 million trees all over the world by 2025, coinciding with the company’s 150th foundation anniversary.

Taguig Administrator Atty. Jose Luis Montales, appearing on behalf of Mayor Cayetano during the activity, thanked Toshiba officials for bringing over the seedlings to the city.

“Taguig is indeed honored to host this tree-planting activity. It’s heart-warming to know that while other corporations are exploiting the environment, Toshiba is fighting to save it,” Montales said.

A significant partner in the C5 Road tree-planting is the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA), which was tasked to create a landscape plan for the spot. In turn, the local government will shoulder the maintenance work needed for the plants to flourish.

At least 150 volunteers composed of members from Taguig’s City Environmental and Natural Resources Office (CENRO), officials from the city government, MMDA and Toshiba participated in the tree-planting.

Winners of Ms. Earth Philippines 2011 also got their hands dirty by taking part in the activity.

Also attending the event were Shoji Yoshioka, corporate senior vice president of Toshiba Corp.; Yoshiyuki Yano, president of Toshiba Info  and Corazon Jimenez, MMDA general manager.
