Taguig hurdles K-12 challenges
Ready for Senior High School implementation
The city of Taguig is expected to have a smooth implementation of the K – 12 Program starting June 13.
Taguig Mayor Lani Cayetano has found a solution to the challenges posed by the implementation of the Senior High School Program as she convinced private schools belonging to the Association of Private School Administrators (APSA) to waive additional fees for students covered by the Voucher Program of the Department of Education (DepEd).
The city government of Taguig ; the APSA members; and The Department of Education Taguig and Pateros (DepEd TAPAT) have entered into a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) making sure that no additional fees will be collected from those covered by the Voucher Program.
“We are very grateful for the gesture of the association of private schools. This sacrifice shows their firm commitment to have an improved education system. I hope that our solution to the problems related to the K- 12 implementations could be duplicated in other parts of the country,” Mayor Lani said.
Dr. George Tizon, administrator of DepEd TAPAT explains that public schools can absorb all the city’s 12,167 grade 10 completers. But, doing so, the incoming grade 11 students will be forced to attend classes even on weekends.
“Nobody would want to attend classes during weekends. The intervention made by Mayor Lani; APSA ; and DepEd Tapat save the day for the Senior High School Program implementation in Taguig,” Tizon said.
The APSA has been supportive of Mayor Lani’s programs on education. They have partnered with the city government in the implementation of the Taguig Learners Certificate (TLC) Scholarship Program which aims to decongest public schools. Under the program, the local government shoulders the tuition and other fees of students in public schools who transferred to private schools.
The public school system of Taguig has shown vast improvement since Mayor Lani assumed office in 2010. From number 13 in the NCR prior to Mayor Lani’s administration, Taguig is now number 1 in the National Achievement Test (NAT) among LGU’s in the National Capital Region (NCR).
Taguig also prides itself in coming up with a comprehensive scholarship program. The Php 600 million Lifeline Assistance for Neighbors In-Need (LANI) Scholarship Program continues to provide an opportunity to Taguig residents who want to go to college or to those who want to take post graduate courses. ###
FILIPINO VERSION:
