Taguig City intensifies preparations for the New Year

Local government designates firecracker zones in barangays

Taguigeños can welcome the new year with less worries as the local government heightens its security and safety preparations.

The local Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) continues to implement its “Oplan Paalala – Iwas Paputok” campaign, where five (5) fire trucks go around the city while playing a recording reminding the residents of the do’s and don’ts in welcoming the New Year. Oplan Paalala is an all-year round activity led by the BFP.

According to Taguig City Fire Marshal Supt. Flor-ian A. Guerrero, they have been boosting their information campaign drive since Dec. 16 to continue to remind Taguigeños about the safe celebration of the holidays.

“These fire trucks run on a daily basis and their first shift starts at 10 a.m. while the second shift starts at 4 p.m. At the same time, we also provide flyers to the residents,” he added.

The flyers contain reminders about buying products that bear marks that they passed safety inspection and quality standards. They also advise everyone to familiarize themselves with their own fire escape plan inside their homes.

Complementing these safety and security measures, the Taguig City Police Station has also been conducting symposia in all 28 barangays starting December 7.

The symposium is an information campaign for the prevention of crime and incidents. Participants include police officers, barangay leaders and other community members.

Led by Taguig City Police Station – Police Community Relations (PCR), the symposium also served as a venue for reminding the public about the penalties for individuals who manufacture, sell, distribute or use firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices in violation of the implementing rules and regulations of Republic Act No. 7183 (An Act Regulating the Sale, Manufacture, Distribution and Use of Firecrackers and Other Pyrotechnic Devices); and for individuals who will unlawfully discharge a firearm.

The authorities also warned everyone to veer away from using banned firecrackers like piccolo, super lolo, whistle bomb, atomic big trianggulo, goodbye earth, judas’ belt and watusi.

“Iwas Akyat-Bahay Safety Tips” and safety reminders when riding a cab were also discussed.

The City Government also imposed a total ban on the use of unauthorized firecrackers and limited the conduct of mere “community fireworks display” in designated areas of certain barangays, in compliance with Executive Order No. 28 series of 2017.

Seven of the 28 barangays in Taguig – Ibayo-Tipas, Maharlika, Central Bicutan, North Signal, Western Bicutan, Upper Bicutan and North Daang Hari — have implemented a total ban on unauthorized firecrackers while the rest have designated the following areas as their firecracker zones:

Taguigeños are also invited to join the New Year’s Eve countdown and celebrations at the Bonifacio High Street, Bonifacio Global City.

“We want to make these holiday celebrations peaceful, orderly and safe for all Taguigeños who will be spending quality time with their families, so rest assured that we will double our efforts in providing assistance to them, as well as go after anyone violating RA 7183 and EO 28,” Taguig City Mayor Lani Cayetano said.
