Mayor Cayetano sends Taguig studes to Leadership Seminar
Fulfilling her promise to focus on education, Taguig Mayor Lani Cayetano on Monday bared that the city government sponsored the participation of some 144 student leaders to a special seminar in Baguio City.
“I uttered numerous times during campaign period that I would focus on education if I become mayor. As such, we’ve participated in the program of the Department of Education (DepEd) to train young officials of the (Taguig) Student Council in Baguio City,” Cayetano said.
According to the 28-year-old local chief executive, all Supreme Student Government (SSG) officers from every high school in Taguig were sent to the Leadership Seminar at Teacher’s Camp in the country’s summer capital.
This year’s Leadership Seminar, which is held annually by DepEd, began last Friday, September 3 and will end on Tuesday, September 7. Around 8,000 students from all high schools nationwide participated in the event.
This year, Taguig city topped all 17 local government units in Metro Manila in terms of most number of delegates sent to the seminar with 100 percent attendance representing all student council officers from all ten high schools in the city.
In bringing the students out of the classroom and into such seminars and workshops, Mayor Cayetano said that she wants to further enrich the student leaders’ experiences in a way that no book could ever do.
“I believe that students in Taguig, especially the leaders among them, should not be confined to what their books can teach them. They should also be given the chance to go out of Taguig and interact with students from other schools in the country,” she explained.
“In return, we just want these young leaders to be a channel of blessing by sharing to their fellow students what they learned from the seminar,” she added.
Mayor Cayetano stressed her belief that the city government should endeavor to mold Taguig’s youth into good leaders of society early on.
During her time as representative of District I (Taguig-Pateros), Cayetano was already backing exceptional and promising students by sending them to similar seminars, workshops and other opportunities for training. ###
