Mayor Lani honored Taguig’s new math whiz
The City Government of Taguig recently feted the city’s newest “Math Wizard,” sixth-grade student Farrel Eldrian Wu of New Life Christian Academy.
The 11-year-old Wu, a Taguig resident, won the gold medal in the individual category of the 14th Po Leung Kuk Primary Mathematics World Contest (PMWC) held in Hong Kong between July 13 and 17. Wu was the youngest of the Philippine contingent to the prestigious math tilt.
City Mayor Lani Cayetano awarded a Plaque of Appreciation and Cash incentive in the amount of P10,000.00 to the pupil.
“On behalf of the city government, I congratulate MGC New Life Christian Academy’s Farrel Eldrian Wu for bagging the gold medal in this international math competition,” a beaming Mayor Cayetano said in an earlier message to the pupil.
Further magnifying the pupil’s achievement is the fact that he took home the only gold medal for the Philippines in the competition, which showcased number-crunchers from 14 other nations. The young math wizard also won a silver medal in the same contest.
“May your outstanding achievement serve as an inspiration to other young students in Taguig that anyone of them could join and even win international contests, if you put your heart into it,” Ate Lani added.
Meanwhile, lawyer Darwin Icay, Mayor Cayetano’s spokesperson, said that Wu’s victory continues the “winning tradition” of Taguigeños in high-level math competitions.
Earlier this year, four other math wizards from Senator Renato Companero Cayetano Memorial Science and Technology High School (SRCCMSTHS) namely Joshua Cubales, Aljan Balbuena, Glaiza Marie Lipato and Carl Rey Maximo won the championship trophy in the Sharp Calculators-MTGMath Trail and problem solving competition.
The team from SRCCMSTHS bested contingents from 24 other schools, both public and private, from around Metro Manila and Luzon.
“As the Cayetano administration works to uplift the quality of education here in Taguig by investing in infrastructure projects and an expanded scholarship program, it is very fulfilling to see that our young students continue to reap honors both here and abroad. These kids are proof that we’re on path toward achieving educational excellence,” Icay said.
FILIPINO VERSION:
Darwin Icay.
