Taguig City helps in bringing free quality education to other provinces
From local to regional
PENS sure made hundreds of students happy.
More than 600 underprivileged but deserving students in Olongapo, Zambales received free school supplies on September 15, through the initiative of the Taguig City Chapter of the Department of Education – Partnership of Employees and Non-teaching Staff (DepEd-PENS).
Students from Iram Elementary School were the first recipients of DepEd-PENS’ Opensa Kontra Kakulangan sa Edukasyon (OKKE) project, which was launched during its first national convention held in Baguio City from August 25 to 27.
OKKE aims to provide free school supplies to public schools in remote areas throughout the country.
A total of 627 students from Iram Elementary School received three notebooks, one pair of shoes, two pencils, two ballpens, pad papers and reading materials.
The supplies were put together in donation boxes situated in different public and private schools in Taguig City.
DepEd Office of the School Governance and Operations’ Chief Education Supervisor and DepEd-PENS National President Dr. George P. Tizon said the project came about after his group’s tour in several parts of the country months back.
He said they were inspired when they saw one Aeta student enthusiastically attending classes even if he was barefoot in Zambales.
In the other provinces, he said they also saw several students wearing mismatched pairs of slippers and carrying knapsacks with almost nothing inside.
“We’ve seen that despite their unfortunate situation, they are still eager to learn and that’s why we wanted to help them,” Dr. Tizon added.
He said OKKE was also in line with the Taguig City government’s priorities, one of which is education.
Apart from school supplies, public school students in Taguig are given health kits and sets of ready-to-wear uniforms.
“(The project) has given us the opportunity to pay it forward to other Filipino students who aren’t fortunate enough to have access to free quality education like what we have here in Taguig City,” Tizon said.
Aside from Iram Elementary School in Olongapo, Zambales, public schools in Romblon, Cagayan de Oro City, Tanauan, Leyte, Samar and Cebu City have been selected as beneficiaries of OKKE.
The distribution of school supplies for these provinces will be held from September to December 2017. ###
FILIPINO VERSION
Mula lokal hanggang rehiyonal
