Taguig City University studes claim P5,000 financial assistance; additional P5,000 given as merit incentive for academic achievers
Students at the city-run university received last month, financial assistance from Taguig City, enabled by a newly approved city ordinance granting students a scholarship allowance each semester plus merit incentives for students who excel in academics.
The new City Ordinance No. 08, Series of 2019 provides that all students at Taguig City University (TCU) would receive P5,000 in educational assistance every semester.
“Syempre nung umpisa ay katulad din po ako ng iba na na-shock kasi una sa lahat ay zero tuition fee na nga — as in 100% na full scholarship na kami,” said beneficiary Dominic H. Dalaguit. He is a freshmen studying Bachelor of Science in Entrepreneurial Management. He is the youngest of 6 siblings.
Dalaquit said he would add some of the assistance to his savings and share the rest to his parents.
Edralyn A. Hernani, a senior Psychology student, shared the same thankful spirit: “Sobrang happy ko po… Hernani plans to use the financial help to finish her thesis. She is a graduating student, who since her elementary days, benefitted from the comprehensive educational assistance of Taguig.
Still under the ordinance, the cream of the crop at TCU can receive an added P5,000 each semester.
The merit incentive will go to students garnering a general weighted average (GWA) of at least 1.75 with no failing and incomplete marks or dropped subjects in the preceding semester.
“While these students are already considered full scholars of the city since the local government shoulders all their tuition fees and miscellaneous expenses, we are fully aware that they still have other education-related expenses to deal with, hence, this ordinance that will encourage them to continue pursuing their dreams,” said Taguig City Mayor Lani Cayetano.
An interested TCU student can qualify for the scholarship program if he/she is a bonafide resident of Taguig City for at least three years immediately preceding the application; of good moral character; a duly registered voter of Taguig City if the applicant is already 18 years of age and, if not, at least one of his/her parents is a duly registered voter of Taguig City.
For the merit incentive, the Registrar’s Office of TCU will provide the list of regular college students with qualified GWA at the end and before the start of each semester.
The applicants for both grant will be evaluated by the Screening Committee created and authorized by the City Mayor.
The ordinance took effect on the second semester of the current school year 2018-2019.
The move is only one of several proofs that quality does not come with a price at TCU, which for years has provided tertiary education to Taguigeños at no cost to them.
The City of Taguig is transforming TCU into a university offering quality education. All programs and courses at the city-run university are CHED accredited/recognized. Passing rates for the licensure examination for criminologists, teachers and psychometricians are higher than the average national passing rates. TCU has also recently produced a topnother (8th) in the Criminologist Licensure Examination. The city has also made sure that sound policies are implemented in TCU including a competitive and fair entrance examination and a No-Collection policy.
Under Mayor Lani Cayetano’s administration, the probinsyudad has continued emphasizing education, devoting the highest budget to its educational programs from preschool to college.
The City of Taguig also continues to implement the Lifeline Assistance for Neighbors In-Need (LANI), a scholarship program designed to cater to all Taguigeño youth. Its coverage has only increased through the years as, in July 2017, the city government of Taguig raised scholars’ allowances. The packages now range from P15,000 to P60,000, depending on the type of scholarship a student has availed.
In addition to all these, Taguigeño students in public schools receive free school supplies before the start of each school year. These freebies include shoes, school bags, uniforms, raincoats, notebooks, hygiene kits, and emergency grab bags.
Mayor Cayetano noted that all the initiatives in education were toward a vision of a more porgressive probinsiyudad.
“We dream of a better Taguig City. What we can do as a city in order to fulfill this is to provide various initiatives that will allow our children to dream and have the means to fulfill them,” she said.###
“While these students are already considered full scholars of the city since the local government shoulders all their tuition fees and miscellaneous expenses, we are fully aware that they still have other education-related expenses to deal with, hence, this ordinance that will encourage them to continue pursuing their dreams,” saad naman ni Taguig City Mayor Lani Cayetano.
“We dream of a better Taguig City. What we can do as a city in order to fulfill this is to provide various initiatives that will allow our children to dream and have the means to fulfill them,” wika pa ni Mayor Lani.###
