TAGUIG CRAFTS IMPROVED DISASTER PREPAREDNESS
To ensure better preparedness in case of a major calamity in the city, Taguig Mayor Lani Cayetano has directed barangay officials to submit a comprehensive disaster management plan on their areas of jurisdiction.
Specifically, Mayor Lani tasked the officials of the city’s 28 barangays to outline the process in responding to disasters and identify equipment they needed for a faster and coordinated response during disasters.
“We want our officials to be better prepared in times of calamities to prevent the loss of lives and minimize injuries among our citizens,” said Mayor Lani, adding that the city government wants to be at the forefront of climate change mitigation and adaptation.
Mayor Lani stressed that the city government is ready to provide the equipment every barangay needs for disaster response.
The barangay officials were given a month to complete their respective disaster plans, to be submitted to the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) for appropriate action.
The plan to draft a barangay disaster management plan is part of the mandate of local government units under Republic Act 10121 or the Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act of 2010.
The Taguig CDRRMO and disaster officials representing their barangays have attended a recent training conducted by the Department of Interior and Local Government in Clark, Pampanga on disaster awareness and preparedness, which included preparation of a thorough disaster plan.
The CDRRMO has identified at least three potential areas that could be used centralized evacuation centers in Taguig in case of a major earthquake strike, although the choice has yet to be finalized.
Among the possible centralized evacuation centers eyed by the CDRRMO include the golf course in Army headquarters in Fort Bonifacio, the parking lot at the Camp Bagong Diwa in Bicutan and the Baseball Stadium in Barangay Ususan, which provides better access for relief distribution.
In accordance with disaster preparedness measures, the city also plans to implement institutional city-wide earthquake drills in the first quarter of the year.
In case of typhoons, public schools and covered courts will still be used as evacuation centers.
Atty. Darwin Icay, Public Information office chief, said that the city’s programs are not limited to disaster relief but also to address the adverse impacts of climate change.
“The Cayetano administration has wide-ranging programs on disaster response because the city government does not want officials to be ill-prepared in responding to calamities,” said Atty. Icay.
Recently, Taguig City and the Australian government signed a partnership to build a P2.5-billion housing resettlement for vulnerable communities in the city. It aims to build about 1,800 housing units for families.
Likewise, Taguig City was selected by the Australian government as pilot testing site for a high-resolution geo-hazard map that would provide city officials with better information on areas vulnerable to various types of calamities like typhoon, flooding, landslides and earthquakes. END

Upang matiyak ang kahandaan sa panahon ng malaking kalamidad, inatasan kamamakailan ni Mayor Lani Cayetano ang mga opisyal ng barangay na mag-sumite ng komprehensibong disaster management plan para sa kanilang mga nasasakupan.
Sa naturang plano, nais ni Mayor Lani na tukuyin ng mga opisyales ng 28 barangay ng lungsod ang mga hakbang sa pagresponde nila sa panahon ng kalamidad at ilista ang mga kailangan nilang kagamitan para sa mas mabilis at maayos ang pagtugon sa panahon ng kalamidad.
“Hangad kong maging handa ang mga opisyal ng lungsod sa panahon ng kalamidad upang walang masayang na buhay at kaunti lamang ang masaktan,” ayon kay Mayor Lani, na iginiit ang kanyang pagnanais na manguna ang Taguig sa climate change mitigation at adaptation.
Tiniyak ni Mayor Lani na handa ang pamahalaang lungsod na bilhin ang mga kakailanganin gamit ng bawat barangay para sa pagresponde sa panahon ng kalamidad.
Isang buwan ang ibinigay na taning sa bawat konseho ng barangay para makumpleto ang kanilang mga disaster plan na dapat nilang isusumite sa City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO).
Ang planong pagbalangkas sa barangay disaster management plan ay bahagi ng mandato sa mga lokal na pamahalaan alinsunod sa Republic Act 10121 na kilala rin bilang Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act of 2010.
Kamakailan ang Taguig CDRRMO at mga disaster official na kumatawan sa iba’t ibang barangay ng lungsod ay sumailalim sa isang pagsasanay ng Department of Interior and Local government (DILG) ukol sa “disaster awareness and preparedness”.
Sa isinagawang pagsasanay sa Clark Pampanga ay tinuruan din ang mga opisyal kung paano gumawa ng isang komprehensibong disaster plan.
Samantala, natukoy na ng CDRRMO ang tatlong lugar na posibleng gagawing mga evacuation center sa Taguig sa sandaling maganap ang malakas na paglindol, subalit hindi pa pinal ang desisyon dito.
Kabilang sa mga naturang lugar ang Army headquarters sa fort Bonifacio, ang parking lot sa Camp Bagong Diwa sa Bicutan at ang Baseball stadium sa Barangay Ususan kung saan madaling maihahatid ang relief goods.
Kaugnay sa paghanda sa kalamadid, plano rin ng pamahalaang lungsod na magpatupad ng regular na city-wide earthquake drills sa unang tatlong buwan ng bawat taon.
Kapag may bagyo naman, ang mga pampublikong paaralan at mga covered court ang magsisilbing evacuation centers.
Nilinaw naman ni Atty. Darwin Icay, hepe ng Public Information Office (PIO) na hindi lamang disaster relief ang magiging saklaw ng programa dahil kasama rito ng pagtugon sa epekto ng climate change.
“Malawak ang programa sa disaster response ng Cayetano administration dahil ayaw nitong maging hilaw ang paghahanda ng mga opisyal sa mga kalamidad,” pahayag ni Icay.
Kamakailan ay lumagda sa isang kasunduan ang Pamahalaang Lungsod ng Taguig para sa pagtatayo ng P2.5 bilyong halaga ng housing project na siyang paglilipatan ng mga residenteng nakatira sa mga delikadong lugar sa lungsod. Tinatayang 1,800 housing unit ang maipatatayo sa ilalim ng “Brace Program”.
Napili din ang Taguig ng Australian government na lugar upang gawin ang pilot testing sa high-resolution geo-hazard map na magbibigay ng mas malawak na impormasyon sa mga pinuno ng lungsod sa mga lugar na nanganganib sa panahon ng bagyo, baha, landslide, at lindol.
