Taguig Mayor Lani Cayetano said the distribution of new fishing equipment, which includes quality fishnets and other fishing paraphernalia, is aimed at improving the livelihood of fisherfolks and at the same time boost their confidence.

A total of 1,080 registered fisherfolks earlier this month received their equipment during a turn-over ceremony held at the Cayetano Sports Complex.

“This gesture is just a confirmation of Taguig City’s good relationship with our fisherfolk community, and we want to assure them that their local government is there help them be more productive,” said Mayor Lani.

The program is under the bottom-up budgeting of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), which considers local government units’ development needs as identified in their respective local poverty reduction action plans.

The Taguig government also gave four parao boats and 12 lunday boats, which will greatly enable fisherfolks to increase the number of their yields.

Taguig also regularly provides fingerlings to these fisherfolks in order for them to maintain that normal fishing cycle of breeding and harvesting all-year round in their fishing sanctuary.

“What we want is to improve the livelihood of our fisherfolks and increase their income. Our hope and prayer is for them to prosper and fully enjoy the fruits of their labor. With the new fishing equipment and with our regular supply of finerlings, they will surely be more efficient in what they do,” she added.

Taguig as “ProbinSyudad”

Mayor Lani said despite the urban development, the City of Taguig also wishes to maintain and preserve a number of fishing community in its coastal barangays as part of the efforts of the local government to promote the city’s “ProbinSyudad,” an environment that enjoys the amenity of a highly urbanized city but does not disregard the freshness of a healthy rural living.

The Taguig City Agriculture Office reported that local fishermen still enjoy an abundance of catch – averaging about 29 kilos per day for motorized boats and 23 kilos for non-motorized boats.

During the same event, registered participants were also given their new official identification cards, which is valid for two years and renewable upon their request.

With the new identification card, the city government will be given the leverage in assessing the scope of services to be provided, while fisherfolks can now be prioritized in the city’s services and programs.

Mayor Lani said her administration will continue to provide services and assistance to the fisherfolks in cooperation with the Department of Agriculture.

“Kami ay nagpapasalamat sa patuloy na pagsuporta ni Mayor Lani sa aming mga mangingisda, dagdag pa ang bagong fisherfolk ID na ibinigay sa amin, ito’y malaking tulong lalo na sa aming mga pamilya,” said Mr. Aquilino Causon, President of the City Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management Council.

The Taguig City Agriculture Office is also preparing for the boat registration program that the city will conduct within the year. ###

Taguig bilang isang “ProbinSyudad”
