Taguig hosts international Math & Science competition

Now a center for academic excellence in the country, Taguig City has organized – together with the Mathematics Trainers Guild-Philippines (MTG) – the 10th International Mathematics and Science Olympiad for Primary Students (IMSO) that drew participants from 18 countries all over the world.

Mayor Lani Cayetano bared that about 450 delegates from countries including the Philippines, South Korea, Thailand, South Africa, China, Taiwan, China, Indonesia, India, Nigeria, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Kazakhstan, Brunei, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Bangladesh will be participating on the said competition, which is currently ongoing since November 25 in Alfonso, Cavite and will be concluded on November 29.

“This is a very rare opportunity for Taguig City to be part of an international endeavor that would help young people with exceptional skills to further their interests in Math and Science. It also showcases our efforts here in Taguig to improve the quality of education in the public school system,” Mayor Lani said.

The local chief executive disclosed that the closing and awarding ceremony of the event will be held on November 28 at the Samsung Hall at SM Aura, Bonifacio Global City, which will be live-streamed on Taguig City’s Facebook page, I Love Taguig (https://www.facebook.com/taguigcity).

The country’s representatives will be composed of elementary students from public and private schools.

The Philippines first hosted the IMSO in Naga City in 2011.

Taguig City has no shortage of students that garnered victories in international academic competitions.

Just this July, Joshua Cuballes, a third year student at the Senator Renato “Companero” Cayetano Memorial Science and Technology High School (SRCC- MSTHS), won one of the 23 gold medals handed out to winners in the recently-concluded Asia Cup Mathematics Olympiad held at the Buddhist Mau Fung Memorial College.

One of his teammates, SRCC-MSTHS’s Daryl Joe Santos, also won a bronze medal in the same competition.

“This is clear and convincing proof that the quality of education in our city is indeed world-class,” Mayor Lani said upon learning of the two students’ recent victories.

The Philippine delegation in the event won two gold medals in the said competition, which included participants from top schools in China, Singapore, Macau, Indonesia and South Korea.

Aside from the gold medal, Cuballes also won a bronze medal in the Gifted Mathematicians “Green World Cup” International Tournament Finals 2013 where his two other teammates – Santos and Marc Daniel Jamindang – also received merit awards.

Jamindang and Santos also received a bronze medal and Merit Award, respectively, in the 22nd King of Mathematics International Tournament Finals 2013. ###
