Taguig launches clean-up drive for esteros, waterways
Taguig City government will launch on Monday, April 29 a two-day clean-up drive for esteros and waterways in several parts of the city.
Mayor Lani Cayetano said this project is regularly being conducted to rid Taguig communities of accumulated garbage that not only clogs up the drainage system but also endangers the health of the citizens as well.
“This is also aimed at beautifying our surroundings while preserving the health and well-being of Taguigenos. The accumulated garbage in some of our waterways is an eyesore, and it hampers our flood-mitigating efforts,” said Mayor Lani.
The clean-up drive is entitled “Linis-Ilog Project” and will be lead by Taguig City’s Lake and River Management Office (LRMO) in cooperation with the Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA) and the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA).
According to Elmer Cipriano, officer-in-charge of LRMO, other departments within the Taguig City government were also tapped to aid in the clean-up drive such as the Traffic Management Office, Solid Waste Management Office, City Environment and Natural Resources Office, General Services Office, City Health Office, Rescue and Engineering Offices and the Local Utility Office.
“More than 250 people will be participating in this project, which is aimed at cleaning up tons of garbage accumulated in our waterways,” Cipriano said.
The efforts will be concentrated in cleaning up the 3-kilometer long Conga Creek, which encompasses Barangays New Lower Bicutan and Hagonoy.
Cipriano said the two-day drive will be conducted on Monday and Tuesday, from 6 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
“We will also be distributing brochures to the community on the proper disposal of wastes as well as informing them of the adverse effects to their health of having unsanitary surroundings,” he added.
Apart from this, Cipriano said they would also be de-clogging the waterways that lead to the creek as an anti-flood effort.
