Taguig officials personally hand over calamity assistance to victims of ‘Nina’

Extending the city’s services

Taguig City Mayor Lani Cayetano and Senator Alan Peter Cayetano, together with Vice Mayor Ricardo Cruz Jr. and some city councilors recently visited the provinces of Albay and Camarines Sur to personally turn over the calamity assistance checks given by the city government of Taguig for the areas adversely affected by Typhoon Nina.

“We want to personally see the situation of the people in Bicol region after the devastation of Typhoon Nina. Seeing the typhoon’s aftermath, we saw that the residents really need assistance. We hope that from the amount and aid we have given them, it would help them build a new life,” said Mayor Lani, whose hometown, Tiwi in Albay province, was one of the hardest hit areas of the typhoon.

Aside from the turnover of checks, Mayor Lani also donated toys to the children of the cities and municipalities they visited.

Taguig City Vice Mayor Ricardo Cruz Jr.  expressed his sympathy to the victims of the calamity. “It’s really overwhelming – there’s no electricity, you can see buses and trucks turned upside down, light posts and schools were also destroyed. As we were giving checks for the calamity assistance, one of the Mayors of the municipalities we visited even cried,” the vice mayor added.

The Taguig City Council, headed by the Vice Mayor, passed a resolution last December 27, 2016 authorizing the release of calamity assistance in the total amount of P9 Million to the people of the areas severely affected by Typhoon Nina and Typhoon Lawin.

The P9 million calamity assistance was donated to the provinces of Albay, Camarines Sur, Cagayan and Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR). The five municipalities of Albay – Libon, Polangui, Tiwi, Oas and Malinao – received P1,000,000 each; the province of Camarines Sur was given P2,000,000 while the province of Cagayan and CAR each received P1,000,000.

“Taguigeños will continue to give assistance to our fellow Filipinos. We will always try to extend our support as much as we can to those who are really in need,” Mayor Lani added.

In December 2016, Typhoon Nina left destruction to more than 77,754 families in the province of Albay and Camarines Sur while Typhoon Lawin created P5.2 billion agricultural damage in the province of Cagayan and displaced 106,456 families in CAR last October 2016. ###
