Taguig opens doors for animal adoption

Rescued cats and dogs deserve new homes with caring families- Mayor Lani

The local government of Taguig, through the City Veterinary Office, has opened the doors for Taguigeños to adopt rescued dogs and cats staying at the city pound.

Mayor Lani Cayetano said the adoption of rescued animals is part of the city government’s mission to promote animal welfare in the city.

The City Veterinary Office opened its pet adoption process for city constituents who are willing to open their homes to rescued animals.

“These rescued cats and dogs deserve new homes with caring families. This initiative expresses the intention of the city that every “bantay” and “muning” have a right to be taken care of,” said Mayor Lani.

Animal adoption guidelines include filling out of required forms, interviews and background check conducted by the City Veterinary Office. Persons who are interested in adopting are requested to visit the city pound.

Rescued dogs and cats are spayed and neutered upon staying at the city animal pound. The city veterinary office also makes sure that animals kept in city animal pound are provided with proper food to bring them back to their healthy form.

Animals will only be released to those who will meet the adoption criteria. The whole adoption process is totally free.

The City Veterinary Office has been conducting programs and activities that promote animal welfare to stray pets like cats and dogs in the city.

One of the city’s priority programs is the free rabies vaccinations for pet cats and dogs, which become effective in eliminating cases of rabies and rabies contamination throughout the city.

The City Health Office, for its part, provides free anti-rabies shots for people inflicted with the virus through the city’s two Animal Bite Treatment Centers (ABTC) in barangays Ibayo-Tipas and North Signal.

City Veterinarian Dr. Alex Siblag advised those who were bitten by stray animals to refrain from resorting to self-medication or believing in hearsay on how to treat animal bites or scratches.

“The best way to treat wounds is to wash it with soap and running water to get rid of the bacteria and proceed to the nearest health center or ABTC,” Siblag said.

With this, Mayor Lani is urging pet owners to be responsible for taking care of their pets and see to it that they are properly vaccinated.

Pet owners can also avail free spay and neutering services for cats and dogs, all they need to do is call and schedule their appointment with the veterinary office.

Free walk-in animal checkups are also available to pet owners. ###
