Taguig public school studes feted for global excellence in science, math, robotics

YES to excellence!

Scores of public school students from Taguig took home the Secretary’s Medal at the Youth Excellence in Science (YES) Awards on February 14 at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City.

Eighty-nine (89) students from at least 10 public elementary and high schools in Taguig were given the recognition on the 11th year of the YES rites of the Department of Science and Technology – Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI). They were honored with hundreds more across the National Capital Region who took home bronze, silver and gold medals from various international math and science competitions last year.

“It is really overwhelming because this is my first time to receive the YES Award,” said Izra Myca Uldama, a Grade 11 accountancy, business and management student at Senator Renato Companero Cayetano Memorial Science and Technology High School (SRCCMSTHS). “Receiving the recognition was the reward of all the hard work I put into the trainings and the competition itself,” added Uldama who snagged a gold medal at the International Mathematics Wizards Competition held in Jakarta, Indonesia in May last year.

For Arthur Betez Jr., a Grade 11 science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) student at Taguig Science High School (TagSci), receiving the YES Award was “fulfilling” especially for students like him “who really aim to bring home awards for our school, for the city and for the entire country as well.” Betez won a bronze medal at the FIRA Roboworld Cup held in China last July 16-20, 2018.

Betez and Uldama were just two of the many awardees from the city. Also contributing to the probinsiyudad’s overall haul were students from Silangan Elementary School, Upper Bicutan National High School, RP Cruz Elementary School, KERIS, Kapt. Jose Cardones Memorial Elementary School, Taguig Integrated School, Upper Bicutan Elementary School and Signal Village National High School.

The participation of public schools in global events is possible in large part because of the support of the local government unit.

“The city has given us various kits which we used for our contests and the local government sponsored all our competitions. Even though there are times we fail, Taguig City has never stopped offering its support to us,” explained Betez.

Students who compete in national and international competitions also get full subsidies for airfare, hotel accommodation and registration fees.

The YES awards become a form of validation for the students’ excellence. “This will serve as an inspiration for other students to also aim for this kind of achievement,” Uldama added.

In the City of Taguig, students continue to excel because of an all-out investment in education.

At the center of this is the Lifeline Assistance for Neighbors In-need (LANI), a scholarship program designed to cater to Taguigeño youth who want to pursue their dreams. Last July 2017, the city government of Taguig increased the allowances of city scholars, which now ranges from P15,000 to P60,000 depending on what type of scholarship the student has availed. From P5 million in 2010, Taguig’s scholarship fund grew to P675 million this year and has already produced more than 57,000 scholars.

Apart from this, students from the 36 public schools in the city receive free school supplies, uniforms, hygiene kits, shoes, bags, emergency grab bags, as well as raincoats, before the start of each school year. ###

YES to excellence!

“It is really overwhelming because this is my first time to receive the YES Award,” saad pa ni Izra Myca Uldama, isang Grade 11 accountancy, business at management student sa Senator Renato Companero Cayetano Memorial Science and Technology High School (SRCCMSTHS).

“Receiving the recognition was the reward of all the hard work I put into the trainings and the competition itself,” dagdag pa ni Uldama na nakakuha ng gold medal sa International Mathematics Wizards Competition na ginawa sa Jakarta, Indonesia noong May 2018.

“The city has given us various kits which we used for our contests and the local government sponsored all our competitions. Even though there are times we fail, Taguig City has never stopped offering its support to us,” paliwanag ni Betez.

“This will serve as an inspiration for other students to also aim for this kind of achievement,” saad pa ni Uldama.
