Taguig rolls out summer jobs for students, OSY under SPES

Pursuant to the national government’s Special Program for Employment of Students (SPES), the local government of Taguig has selected some 200 qualified young Taguigeños to start summer jobs for out-of-school youths as well as students who are having their school break.

Taguig Mayor Lani Cayetano said with the implementation of SPES in Taguig, students and out-of-school youth are given the opportunity to gain work experience and at the same time earn extra income during the summer season.

The SPES, which is a project of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), is a program implemented to help enrich the lives of poor but deserving students and out-of-school youths by providing them with summer jobs.

Under the SPES program, the local government of Taguig chose some 200 qualified applicants coming from high school, college, vocational or technical students, and out-of-school youths.

“We always encourage our youths to take this annual opportunity for them to be productive and make their time worthwhile during the school break. This experience enriches them in terms of gaining work knowledge apart from harnessing their expertise when they participate in a real working environment,” Mayor Lani said.

After finishing their time for SPES and when school season starts again, the out-of-school youths who participated can use their earnings to help their parents enroll them back to school.

“Poverty should not become a hindrance in our quest for academic excellence. We, in the City of Taguig, believe that investing in education can change lives. By supporting the program of DOLE, there is an assurance that the beneficiaries will be continuing their studies in the coming school year,” Mayor Lani added.

SPES recipients are now working in various fields ranging from office and administrative duties, clerical and computer functions, field/ community work, tutorial sessions, survey and census, and sales/ marketing.

Aside from summer break, SPES is also offered to high school students during Christmas break. Tertiary, technical or vocational education and out-of-school-youths are allowed to apply anytime of the year.

To be eligible for the program, applicants must be between 15 and 25 years old.

The combined income of their parents should not exceed the latest regional poverty threshold level for a family of six and must have an average passing grade during the last school year attended.
