Taguig rules sikaran-arnis tourney, bags overall title
A group of young martial artists from Taguig City took home the overall championship in the first-ever Sikaran-Arnis Regional Championship Tournament and Demo Team Competition held last July 24 at Barangay Sta. Ana covered court.
Team Sikaran Taguig emerged with the most number of gold trophies and the overall number of trophies during the single-day competition participated by 14 teams.
“Sikaran” is an ancient Philippine art of foot fighting or kick fighting, while “arnis” also known as “Eskrima” and “Kali” refers to a native weapons-based fighting system that usually involves sticks. Both martial arts traced its origin even before the Spanish colonization period.
Lawyer Darwin Icay, Mayor Cayetano’s spokesman, said that the local chief executive lauded the efforts of Sikaran Taguig in proving they are the best in their chosen sporting field.
“Our Ate Lani would like to say ‘good job’ to the kids who bought home pride and honor to the city of Taguig by showing their mastery of Sikaran-Arnis. This would not be possible without the active participation of Taguigeños to the city government’s sports and youth-oriented programs,” Atty. Icay said.
The official results showed that Sikaran Taguig reaped a total of 10 trophies, four golds, one silver and three bronzes. A distant second to overall champion Taguig was Sikaran Tanay, garnering six trophies, while Sikaran Cavite’s five trophies suited up for third place in the regional tournament hosted by Stallion Warrior Sikaran-Arnis Brotherhood of Taguig City and organized by officials Gener Burabod, Ernesto Millanes and Melvin Narral.
“We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to the City Government for the privilege of serving the people through the sports program of our beloved Mayor Lani Cayetano with the support of the City Council. Mabuhay Sikaran-Arnis Taguig!” said Gener Burabod, Stallion Warrior Sikaran-Arnis Brotherhood of Taguig City president and chief instructor.
The individual winners from Team Sikaran Taguig are as follows: Vincent Aoki (Kiddies B Boys Category), Kenley Jones Mingo (Mini Boys C Category), Roselle Mingo (Mini Girls B Category), Vandexon Narral (Black Belt Boys-Junior) for gold; Genesis Burabod (Kiddies A Boy Category) for silver; Juanito Espiritu III (Kiddies A Boys Category), Eldrick Rebenque (Mini Boys A Category), Ian Kit Boris (Mini Boys B Category), Joshua Añano (Mini Boys C Category) and Jorem Cerillos (White Belt Medium Boys) for bronze.###
