Taguig to implement CHEERS Program

Students in evacuation areas to get continuous learning

The city government of Taguig is all set to  implement another pioneering program. This time, it will be called the Child-Friendly, Habitation, Evacuation and Educational Rooms during Storm (CHEERS) program which is designed to minimize disruption in the children’s learning process.

The  City of Taguig and the  Department of Education- Taguig and Pateros (DepED-TAPAT)  will designate a classroom in 18 public schools located in the city’s low-lying areas to be utilized as learning centers for students  during the  evacuation period. The CHEERS classroom facility is equipped with books for story-telling, multi-media devices and other learning materials. Lessons to be offered include reading competency, values integration and story-telling.

Mayor Lani Cayetano said the CHEERS program will  help lessen the trauma experience of the victims while at the same time maximize the time of student-evacuees while in the evacuation centers.

“During and after strong typhoons,  a lot of people including school-age children have to spend days and sometimes weeks at evacuation centers. Through our CHEERS Program, the children’s learning opportunity will not be severely hampered as they will continue to receive lessons  at these temporary shelters,” Mayor Lani said.

Dr. Benjamin Samson, DepEd TAPAT Office of the Schools Division Superintendent officer-in-charge, said that  teachers who have undergone special training will be assigned to  conduct lessons to all school-aged evacuees. The assigned teachers will be given service credits upon submission of reports.

The Taguig City Government has been very supportive to DepEd since assuming her post in 2010. The support propels the DepEd TAPAT to the no. 1 ranking in the National Achievement Test-National Capital Region.

This school year, the six city-funded school buildings were opened to students and teachers in Taguig’s public schools with four other infrastructure projects still in the construction phase. ###

FILIPINO VERSION:
